Exploring Woodland Historic Park by Bike: A Journey Through Nature and History

Nestled just outside Melbourne, the Woodland Historic Park offers an incredible escape into nature and a taste of local history. Known for its scenic trails, native woodlands, and heritage sites, this park is a cyclist's paradise and the perfect spot for a weekend ride.

The park can be accessed by car at the Somerton or Oaklands Road entrances and is most easily accessible by bike via the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. As you enter the park, you're surrounded by eucalyptus trees, with the sounds of nature adding a serene backdrop. The air is crisp and earthy, with the gentle rustling of leaves overhead—a refreshing reminder of nature’s simplicity. The park is home to various wildlife, so keep an eye out for kangaroos, wallabies, and native birds, as well as horses at the Homestead itself.

One of the park’s highlights is Woodlands Homestead, a historic 1840s building that reflects Melbourne’s early pastoral heritage. The homestead offers a glimpse into the life of early settlers, with preserved furnishings, photos, and artifacts. It’s worth stopping here to appreciate the architectural beauty and history. The homestead also has picnic areas and benches, making it an ideal spot to pause, hydrate, and take in the views. Whilst you are there, try Annie’s famous scones at the Homestead Cafe, also offering snacks, treats, light meals and beverages, and their specialty, Devonshire Tea from 10 am-3.30 pm each day.

From the homestead, you can ride towards Gellibrand Hill, which offers an amazing panoramic view of Melbourne and surrounding regions along with a clear view of the planes taking off from the nearby airport; the climb is well worth it.

Cycling through Woodland Historic Park is a unique blend of natural beauty and historical insight—a perfect way to spend the day outdoors while connecting with the region's rich past and vibrant ecology. To add to this the easy access from various cycling routes makes it the perfect addition to a long day ride or adventure.
